PV Waterproof Rail

The Solar PV Waterproof Rail (Model SPC-R-130) is made from ZAM275 zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel. ZAM275 simply means the steel carries a hot-dip Zn-Al-Mg alloy coating weighing 275 g/m². Zinc already protects steel well, but adding aluminium and magnesium takes that protection much further — the coating resists corrosion significantly better than conventional hot-dip galvanized (GI) steel. That makes it a natural fit for outdoor solar mounting systems that face rain, humidity, and industrial or coastal air year after year.

Cutting, punching or drilling a ZAM rail leaves a bare metal edge where the coating is gone — and that is exactly where rust usually starts. ZAM, however, repairs itself. In a humid or corrosive environment, coating material near the cut slowly dissolves into the thin film of moisture on the bare metal and migrates across it, building up a dense protective layer: a white-rust film made mainly of zinc hydroxide, basic zinc chloride and magnesium hydroxide. As this layer grows, it covers the exposed edge, shuts it off from moisture and salt, and effectively stops further corrosion. This natural repair process is the “self-healing” effect of the zinc-aluminium-magnesium coating

The self-healing process follows a natural four-stage mechanism:
(1) the cut edge becomes wet in a humid environment, forming a moisture wetting layer on the metal surface;
(2) coating components (zinc, aluminium, magnesium) flow out into this wetting layer;
(3) the coating composition spreads and gradually covers the whole cut surface;
(4) a dense protective passivation layer is formed, sealing the exposed metal. This mechanism works on cut edges, punched and drilled holes, weld areas, and locations where the coating has been damaged by severe deformation.

Initial protective coverage typically begins within 5 days to 6 months depending on the environment, and the healing process continues for months to several years, until the coating near the cut is gradually exhausted. Accelerated tests (e.g. hot-humid box at 50 °C / 95% RH and salt-spray exposure of 470–1227 hours) show that red rust appearing on cut edges is progressively covered by white rust over time, confirming the coating’s self-healing behaviour.

In a humid and corrosive environment, light red rust may first appear on the bare cut edge — this is normal and does not mean the rail has failed. Over time, the self-healing layer gradually covers the red rust with a dense white-rust protective film, which greatly slows further corrosion and improves the overall corrosion resistance of the section. It should be noted that the cut surface’s corrosion resistance is greatly improved by self-healing but is not identical to the intact coating, and a small amount of white rust on cut edges during processing, storage or transport is acceptable and not a defect.

PV mounting rails are cut to length and pre-drilled with many mounting holes before shipment, which exposes bare metal at exactly the points where corrosion usually begins. Because the ZAM275 coating self-heals at cut edges, punched holes and damaged areas, it protects these vulnerable points for the whole service life of the system — a critical advantage for solar plants designed to last 25 years or more outdoors.
